The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood, Claire Danes Males should read this for an understanding of the power they hold and they power that is perceived to be held by our gender. It is also an interesting speculation about how dystopia can result from the wielding of absolute power.

Import From GoodReads is Underway

I looking for a happy home for my thoughts about the books I read.  Shelfari was horrible. GoodReads was ok and I liked the easy scanning of books into my library, but I never felt at home there.  So, BookLikes, you have my attention.

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity - David Allen I appreciated the simple approach to productivity advocated in this book. The method is not so complex that it can't be implemented (I've been around people that use it.) and the explanations include enough examples that I find I can find where I fit in the process. I've going to have to buy my own copy so I can reread it, mark it up, and refer to as I would a productivity Bible.

The Painted Bird (Playaway Adult Fiction)

The Painted Bird - Jerzy Kosiński, Fred Berman Every few pages brings another basic question of life as observed through the eyes of a child rapidly gaining life experiences without enough life experiences to put them in perspective. Fundamental questions of purpose, existence, reason, are brought to the forefront with each new act of brutality. The simple, direct style adds to the impact of the story's events. Use of metaphor is expert and something I began to see as a treat with each new encounter. It is a book I plan to reread, but not too soon. The emotional cost of reading it, if you allow yourself to invest in it, is high. I approached it too lightly at first and felt myself cringing with the repeated acts of violence.

Ironweed: A Novel

Ironweed: A Novel - William Kennedy When words put their hands on my face, force me to look at them, inject their intensity into my eyes, my veins, and leave me exhausted when I look away, I know that the reading experience was essential, important, real. That happened to me repeatedly as I read this book. I ended loving the characters, or wanting to love the characters despite their unlovability. Surely I will lie awake and imagine the could-of-beens in their lives, even though Kennedy's characters accepted their fates, willingly or not.

Missing Mom

Missing Mom - Joyce Carol Oates I was emotionally invested in this reading (and listening experience), caught up in the upheaval of loss and recovery, as bewildered as the characters by the effects of grief, only to have all of that apparently minimized by a gift-wrapped, no-loose-ends conclusion. In this reading, I saw myself with many of the same undesirable and lamentable characteristics of the created characters. It will be the rare reader that does not see bits of herself in these pages. It is a worthy read, even without satisfaction in the end. Audio book reading was fantastic and contributed mightily to my enjoyment.

Dancing With Devils

Dancing with Devils - Robert D. Emerson Although the stories were compelling and interesting, I felt as I were reading a police report.
